Team

We’re hiring! Do you know an experienced brewer with the highest standards for quality and the work ethic to deliver? Someone who is passionate about making outstanding beer? You’d describe them as a great teammate looking for growth and leadership opportunities. If so, please read on.

About the Head Brewer/Director of Brewing Operations Position

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of increasing levels of responsibility in a professional brewery.

The position will have a high level of autonomy and accountability. They’ll have been responsible for all aspects of the brewhouse in previous positions, from wort production to packaging.

It’s a role for brewers who love to brew. One for brewers who thrive in the madness and thrill of shepherding the brewday from crush to knockout. Digital screens and automated valves are swapped for a direct connection to the process through hands-on brewing with a modern, U.S. made brewhouse.

The best fit for this role will be a person who wants to be at the forefront, producing Estate and truly local beer. What’s unique about our approach? Stirring a Mash Tun of barley you watched grow from the brew deck with water drawn from our natural source. Fermenting the wort with native yeast captured from that same barley field to make one-of-a-kind Estate beer. Then there’s dialing in a mash regime to create lagers with beautiful depth and expression from custom craft malts. Same with hoppy ales — the best ingredients with the time and care to best express them. No short cuts. For all of our beer, we’re focused on the intention, ingredients, and methods to offer guests the finest beer we’re capable of making.

The job is physically demanding. Much of the work will be familiar to a professional brewer. The brewer will need to stand and walk for long periods of time, as well as crouch, kneel, crawl, lift bags up to 55 pounds, walk up stairs, move full kegs, lift cases of cans, move wood barrels, and other common physical requirements in the brewhouse and cellar. Plus, since we’re an estate brewery, additional farm chores may be required from time to time.

Brewer Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of increasing levels of responsibility in a professional brewery.

  • Solid theoretical knowledge of brewing sciences. Brewing school or certificate a plus.

  • Extensive responsibility with wort production, yeast handling, fermentation, cellar work, and packaging.

  • Familiarity with barrels and bottle conditioning.

  • Experience with open fermentation a plus.

  • Willingness to explore new ingredients and methods.

  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing programs.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Forklift operation. Professional training will be provided.

Brewer Responsibilities Include the Following

  • Schedule production.

  • Manage ordering and inventory of materials.

  • Responsible for brew days, with support.

  • Responsible for cellar, including transfers and packaging, with support.

  • Responsible for barrel cellar, with support.

  • Document processes every time.

  • Optimize existing SOPs and create new ones where necessary.

  • Move heavy objects (55+ lbs.) on a regular basis.

The above is a summary and not a comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities.

Compensation

This is a 40 hour a week, full time position. Competitive salary will reflect the experience of a professional brewer. On top of salary, the brewer receives paid time off.

About Wheatland Spring

We regeneratively grow acres of barley and other grains next to the brewhouse. Beyond grains grown at Wheatland Spring, we work directly with craft maltsters, small scale farmers, and producers in our region, focusing on ingredients and prioritizing the expression of each batch of beer. This takes a brewer with a special kind of creative flexibility, attention to detail, and desire to gain a deeper understanding of what field to glass really means.

We make classic styles and modern interpretations with intentional ingredient sourcing at the core. We also make beer that doesn’t neatly fit into existing categories. Designing and creating beers unique to our place and region are some of the most exciting offerings. For us, quality over category wins every time. Having such close relationships with neighbor farmers and our maltster for custom craft malt affords the chance for a brewer to explore the future of U.S. beer.

In addition to clean lagers and ales, the brewer will advance our native yeast barrel program. We ferment farmhouse ales with yeast native to our farm that we wild-capture. These beers are given time, patience, and a close eye to make sure we capture their full expression as they barrel age and bottle condition.
