Live Music: The Short Hill Mountain Boys

The Short Hill Mountain Boys play their own blend of bluegrass, old-time, cajun, classic country, and folk music with a rare passion. Their harmony vocals, fiddling, and guitar picking are tight and practiced like the suit-and-cowboy-hat bluegrass acts, but imbued with the authenticity, spontaneity, and infectious good time of old time mountain music, in which they are well steeped. The Short Hill Mountain Boys' love of the music and skilled musicianship makes converts of audiences new to the genre and is sure to draw and impress aficionados.

Coolship Beer release: Natural Remedy Coolship Saison

Our first endeavor with our Coolship results in an open fermented herbal Saison. Wheatland Spring Farm grown basil and rosemary provide aromatics while lemon medallions offer a hint of tartness. Natural Remedy is a mixed cultured ale featuring our house blend of Saison and Brettanomyces yeast along with a mild acidification from Lactobacillus. Local Lovettsville honey from Lovetown Honey provides a final layer of flavor. The result is a delightfully tart and complex herbaceous refresher. The perfect natural remedy.

First Firkin Saturday

  • Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for First Firkin Saturday. The first Saturday of each month, we’re tappin’ a Firkin at noon. Get there early to make sure you get a taste. Once it’s gone, that’s it!

September’s First Firkin Saturday offers a sneak peak at some of the spirit behind our Inaugural Oktoberfest celebration happening September 20, 21, and 22. This is the same weekend Oktoberfest kicks off in Munich.  Helles lager is the pride of Munich and “Servus” is our salute to and celebration of this enduring style.

Our Bavarian Helles pays tribute by using single-origin spring barley from a small family farm just outside of Munich. This farm has the unique privilege of providing barley for the brewers of Ayinger Brauerei and Augustinerbrau, two of Bavaria’s most renowned breweries.

Through a rare opportunity and relationship with Epiphany Craft Malt, we are pleased to produce a Helles that celebrates small farming both near and far. This malt was meticulously grown by Bavarian farmers and then delicately malted in Durham, North Carolina by Epiphany to highlight the grain’s character. Upon the malt’s arrival here at Wheatland Spring, we crafted a classic Helles lager that reflects a sense of place, honors the past, and paves a way forward.

What’s a Firkin?
A Firkin is a type of beer keg used to create what is traditionally known as Cask Ale or Real Ale.

How’s it work?
The beer inside the Firkin is alive. Come again? A few weeks ago, we transferred actively fermenting beer into the Firkin to capture natural carbon dioxide within solution. This does a few things, but our primary aim is to create a silky, smooth, and highly drinkable beer. Given the way it’s produced and the complex, nuanced flavors it wants to express, the beer is best enjoyed between 40-55 degrees F. Our Firkin beer is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and matured inside of the vessel.

First Firkin Saturday

The next first firkin is going to be a tasty one. It comes from the first beer we’ve made with our coolship. This Land Beer was open fermented in the barn loft above our brewhouse with a house blend of Virginia Saison yeast and Brettanomyces. The beer has no hops. Instead, it was infused with Wheatland Spring farm grown basil and rosemary, along with lemons. While transferring from the coolship to our fermentation vessel, we fed the beer 10 pounds of honey from our friends at Lovetown Honey, just up the road in Lovettsville. The beer tank conditioned for a month before being racked onto juice using blackberries from our friends @lostcornerfarm 15 minutes away in Leesburg. The beer refermented for two weeks in the firkin with the blackberries to create natural carbonation and a smooth, multi-layered, living Land Beer for a delicious summer treat.

NOTE
New going forward: First Firkin Saturday! The first Saturday of each month, we’ll be offering a one-day only special firkin beer. It’ll be tapped minutes before pouring and only available that day. Follow along for updates!
